🎯 2026 Main Line Camp February Guide

Combating the Summer Slide Is Easier Than You Might Think

Yes, it is possible to have a fun summer and combat the “summer slide” at the same time! Benchmark School —a leading expert in supporting students who learn differently—has top tips for keeping kids’ reading and writing skills sharp over the summer.

  • Daily Reading: Frequency matters! Have your child read 15 to 30 minutes every day.
  • Keep It Easy: The daily reading material should be easy and enjoyable, not challenging.
  • Join Them: Read with your child. Parental support is a helpful motivator.
  • Daily Writing: Have your child keep a summer journal, practicing writing for 10 to 15 minutes every day.

These basic tips will go a long way towards helping your child keep their school skills sharp. Get creative with variations that might entice your child–maybe they’d like to decorate their summer writing journal, or read books about places they might like to visit.

Enrolling your child in a summer learning program, such as Benchmark Camp, is another way to stimulate your child’s love of learning. You can learn more about Benchmark’s summer offerings here.
