“Ok people listen up and feel free to take notes.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is one of the most requested, and more increasingly tested vitamins in our practice. Often known as the sunshine vitamin, Vitamin D is not a vitamin but a prohormone. Its main roles are in supporting bone health & integrity by promoting calcium and phosphate absorption in the GI tract. More recently, research has shown that it also has impacts in our cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, metabolic, neurologic, mood and immune functions.

Vitamin D deficiency is widespread in our geographic region and has led to the debunking of the myth that adequate sun exposure provides sufficient levels in our bloodstream. In fact, in Pennsylvania, this is only possible from June through August due to our latitudinal location on Earth’s surface. In addition to geography, certain medication classes can contribute to deficiency including some seizure medications, steroids and weight loss medications.

I am often asked what the right dosage of Vitamin D is, which always leads into some confusion by the consumer as they are looking for a fixed dosage for the answer. When responding to this question it often leads to a discussion as the often-normal blood level above 30 is given, Optimal levels are found in the range of 50-80. There are many factors that influence what dosage is appropriate and we can end with the statement the right dosage of Vitamin D is the one that produces a blood level of 50- 80, further highlighting the importance of consulting with a healthcare professional that is knowledgeable about nutritional supplements.

If you’re looking for a fit beauty to show off when walking or jogging, Xena is your lady! She loves to chase a ball or play tug, and she certainly can't get enough of her favorite treats! Spending time with her special people, snuggling is her specialty especially if it includes scratches and pets. And you’ll laugh out loud as her whole-body wiggles when her tail starts going full speed! Xena is a 4-year-old Boxer mix. She’d enjoy the company of another dog with proper introductions. Older kids are preferred if Xena jumps, showing off her true boxer side with her paws reaching up for a hug.

Sophisticated, reserved Frejya is a very handsome gentleman. He can be startled easily. When approached gently, he's thrilled to be petted on his back. His loving nature thrives on your attention and companionship. Frejya has some mild vision loss but it doesn’t stop him playing with toys, entertaining anyone nearby. This sweet, gentle older guy would do best in a quiet home with adults.
