The Longevity Movement Series:
Mitochondrial Enhancement
PQQ
Our cells’ main energy center is the mitochondria, and its main output is ATP. Thousands of the cellular powerhouses reside in almost every cell of our bodies. By using oxygen along with dietary protein, fat, & carbohydrates, energy is created along with byproducts such as free radicals. These free radicals can in turn produce oxidative stress or rusting to simply within our body. It has been theorized that mitochondrial fatigue is at the root of many chronic disease states like dementia, neurological diseases and mental health ailments to name a few.
One compound that has gained significant attention in combatting some of this oxidative or rusting damage at the cellular level is PQQ or Pyroloquinolone Quinone. Some studies have shown that a PQQ deficiency can create up to a 30% reduction in the number of mitochondria found in cells. PQQ also has actions in other beneficial pathways like sirtuins and AMPK. Dosages typically used range between 10-20mg daily and are often found in combination products supporting mitochondrial function. In practice this has often been a valuable addition to TBI clients as well as post stroke. As usual, a reputable brand that uses high-quality raw materials along with 3rd party testing should be considered a Must.
