LOCAL STORIES, BUZZ + AN EVENT ROUNDUP FOR THE 'BURBS

Hi Neighbor,

My daughter ran in April’s 26.2 mile Boston Marathon. When she qualified, it confirmed her intense training and dedication. I travelled to support and cheer her on, carrying a large, colorful sign to stand out in the Boston crowd. However, not being a runner, I couldn’t get my head around the motivation for this grueling test of endurance. And being a self-declared CEO of worry, I was accompanied by my own support team, my husband and a container of Tums.

If you, like me, aren’t a runner and haven’t attended the Boston Marathon, be assured, it’s a very (very) big deal for the runners and the city. Being among the supporters lining the route, the obvious determination of the participants made it impossible to stay silently on the sidelines without shouting enthusiastic encouragement as they breezed by. I was beginning to understand the thrill.

The Longevity Movement Series Hormones Part 1: Progesterone

-By Michael Briggs

The first installment of our Longevity Series on Hormones will explore Progesterone and its many roles in the body. As the first sacrificial lamb in the hormonal cascade to decline during perimenopause, reduced ovarian production of progesterone can lead to symptoms such as mood changes, sleep disturbances, irritability, and irregular menstrual cycles. To assess these changes, healthcare providers often use saliva or blood tests to guide their patients to replacement therapy.

Beyond its well-known role in reproductive health, progesterone offers additional benefits, including support for cardiovascular & brain health, bone density, liver function, and blood sugar regulation. However, it’s important to distinguish natural progesterone from progestins, synthetic alternatives that can have undesirable effects on these systems.

For over 30 years, our compounding pharmacy has specialized in progesterone replacement therapy, helping countless patients achieve positive outcomes during perimenopause & menopause. Depending on individual needs, progesterone can be administered in various forms, including oral capsules, topical creams, or sublingual lozenges. This personalized approach is best guided by a functional or integrative medicine practitioner working with a compounding pharmacist, ensuring optimal dosing tailored to each patient.

Michael Briggs, PharmD, CNC, ICCT serves as COO of Lionville Natural Pharmacy and has been published in The Professional Guide to Complementary & Alternative Therapies, Complementary and Alternative Medicine for Older Adults. The Nursing Drug Handbook Series, and Pharmacotherapy.
