Hi Neighbor,
The rush of back-to-school is over, and by October most kids have found their rhythm—or are still trying to. This is the perfect time for parents to check in, reset routines, and make sure the school year is off to a strong start.
Check in—really check in. Ask open-ended questions like, “What’s been your favorite part of school so far?” or “What’s feeling tricky?” These gentle conversations help kids open up about how things are really going—academically and emotionally.
Fine-tune routines. The excitement of September can fade fast. Take a look at bedtime, mornings, and homework habits. Small tweaks—like packing backpacks the night before or setting up a quiet study spot—can make the days run more smoothly.
Reach out to teachers. By now, teachers know your child’s learning style and classroom vibe. A quick email to ask, “How’s my child adjusting?” goes a long way in showing support and teamwork.
Encourage independence. Let kids take ownership—packing their own bags, using planners, tracking assignments. Praise effort over perfection!
Celebrate small wins. Did they finally remember their water bottle? Study without reminders? Those little victories add up and keep motivation high.
October is the sweet spot—close enough to the start to reset, far enough in to make meaningful changes. A little attention now can help your child thrive all year long.
