Main Line Education Guide: Winter Break Tips

Hi Neighbor!

Winter break has a way of shifting into full “sweatpants and screens” mode. And hey — a little downtime is well-deserved! But if you’re looking for easy ways to keep young minds sharp while school is out, we’ve gathered a handful of local adventures.

When you’re itching to get out of the house, check out these local spots to explore.

Morris Arboretum & Gardens (Chestnut Hill / Philadelphia)
Please Touch Museum (Philadelphia)
The Franklin Institute (Center City Philadelphia)
The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University (Philadelphia)
Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education (Philadelphia)

Use these simple tricks to turn any outing into a memory and a little lesson:

  • Bring a notebook or sketchbook: have kids jot or sketch things that surprise them — a weird plant, a huge fossil, a colorful bird, snow-covered branches.
  • Turn it into a scavenger hunt — e.g., “Find three trees that stay green in winter,” or “Spot an animal skeleton or fossil,” or “Count how many windows the big museum building has.”
  • Leave time for conversation afterward — ask: “What was the coolest thing you saw today?” “If you could bring one thing home, what would it be?”
  • Combine with a cozy follow-up at home — reading a book about dinosaurs after a museum visit, drawing your own “fancy insects,” writing a short story about a garden at night.

Winter break goes by fast. These small moments of discovery are a reminder that learning isn’t confined to classrooms — it’s happening every single day.

Enjoy every moment!

What if education weren’t about how fast children move—but how deeply they understand?

At Gladwyne Montessori, learning unfolds through hands-on exploration and real-world connection.

Our students don’t just memorize; they master. They question, build, and discover meaning in every lesson. From Infant through 6th Grade, we develop thinkers who understand the “why” behind the “what.”

Step inside and see how deep learning begins here.

Take a 1:1 Tour to see a Montessori classroom in action.

This is more than a tour. It’s an invitation to reimagine what education can be. And a chance to see what it looks like when children are given space to grow into themselves.
