Hi Neighbor,
We get this question all the time: What is ChatGPT, and how do I use it?
Well, my answer comes in two parts! First, ChatGPT is like a mix of a chatbot, a search engine, and an AI assistant—kind of like Google on steroids. Remember Google’s “I’m Feeling Lucky” button? It’s like that. Instead of scrolling through a bunch of links to find your answer, ChatGPT gives you a direct response in seconds. It provides direct answers instead of a list of links, but it’s important to note that it does not browse the internet in real-time like Google does. Its knowledge is based on training data up to a certain point (unless using a version connected to the web).
The second part of my answer is that ChatGPT is just one of many AI chatbots out there. Think of it like web browsers—just as you can choose between Chrome, Firefox, or Safari, there are different AI tools to explore, like Claude, Perplexity, YouChat, Google Gemini, Jasper AI, and Microsoft Bing. However, their capabilities and functions differ slightly—some rely on real-time web search (e.g., Perplexity, Bing), while others (e.g., Claude, Gemini) work more like ChatGPT.
With AI becoming a bigger part of our daily lives—including in education—many parents wonder how to navigate it for their kids. Here are some simple tips to help:
✅ Get familiar with AI in education – Take a little time to understand how AI is being used in your child’s learning environment.
✅ Explore different AI tools – There are lots of AI-powered platforms designed to support education—check them out!
✅ Set healthy boundaries – AI can be a great learning aid, but it’s important to monitor usage and set guidelines for when and how it’s used.
✅ Teach critical thinking – Encourage your child to question AI-generated information and think independently, just like they would with any other source.
✅ Keep human interaction a priority – AI is a tool, not a replacement for teachers, parents, or real-world learning experiences.
✅ Stay informed – AI in education is evolving fast! Stay in touch with your child’s teachers and school administrators to understand how it’s being integrated into their learning.
By keeping these tips in mind, you can help your child make the most of AI while ensuring they develop essential thinking and learning skills. At the end of the day, AI is a powerful tool—but nothing replaces real-world guidance, curiosity, and connection!
