🌿 Empowering Girls Through Wellness + Learning

Integrating Wellness and Learning: A Holistic Approach for All-Girls Education

The importance of supporting student mental health and well-being has become increasingly recognized as a critical factor in academic and personal success. Research shows that students who experience positive mental health are more likely to achieve academically, develop strong interpersonal skills, and demonstrate resilience in the face of challenges. For adolescent girls in particular, the middle and high school years can present heightened pressures, including academic expectations, social dynamics, and the impact of social media.

All-girls schools are uniquely positioned to address these needs by creating environments that prioritize both academic rigor and emotional support. Studies suggest that young women benefit from learning communities that emphasize collaboration, empathy, and leadership—qualities that are strengthened when mental health resources are readily accessible. Comprehensive wellness programming, which may include counseling, peer-support initiatives, and curriculum focused on social-emotional learning, ensures that students are equipped with strategies to manage stress, maintain balance, and seek help when needed.

By integrating mental health into the fabric of school life, all-girls institutions prepare students not only to succeed academically but also to cultivate lifelong habits of self-care and resilience. This holistic approach empowers young women to flourish as confident, capable leaders in both their personal and professional lives.

Building Resilience and Community Through Compassionate Support

At the Academy of Notre Dame de Namur, student well-being is more than a program—it is a shared responsibility. ND Cares, the Academy’s holistic approach to wellness, recognizes that social, emotional, and academic health are deeply connected. Its mission is to help every student build resilience and thrive, supported by caring adults and peers.

Established under the leadership of Head of School Dr. Laura Hotchkiss, ND Cares also equips faculty, staff, and parents with resources to guide students. At its core is a team of counselors and specialists who provide individualized support while working to reduce stigma around seeking help. Over the past five years, conversations about wellness have become part of daily life—whether in classrooms, on the field, or online.

Through a partnership with The Jed Foundation, Notre Dame created a strategic plan to strengthen community support, with survey data showing measurable growth in students’ confidence that help is available. Simple tools like wellness cards and campus-wide celebrations of kindness further reinforce a culture of care.

Looking ahead, a new ND Cares Leadership Team will give students a voice in shaping the program. With compassion and strong systems of support, Notre Dame empowers its students to care for themselves and one another.
