How Global Travel Empowers Girls Through Education and Inspiration |
When a student travels the world, it transforms their education by broadening their perspectives, fostering cross-cultural learning, and inspiring ambition. When girls travel - either physically or through stories and digital experiences - they are exposed to different cultures, languages, and ways of life. This global exposure challenges traditional gender roles and stereotypes, especially in communities where girls’ education is undervalued. Seeing how education empowers women around the world motivates girls to pursue their own academic goals with greater determination.
This traveling also facilitates global connections, enabling girls to build networks beyond their local communities. Programs that support international exchange or virtual connection and learning introduce girls to mentors and educational opportunities they may not otherwise have known about. These experiences improve confidence, communication skills, and independence.
Students’ travels help them develop empathy and a global mindset - skills that are important now more than ever in a connected world. Whether they are learning about climate change in New Orleans or exploring the streets of Italy, the world becomes their classroom, and learning becomes an adventure. Global exposure equips students with the knowledge, skills, and inspiration needed to shape their futures and become leaders in their communities and beyond.

Breaking Boundaries: Notre Dame’s Center for Global Leadership Inspires a New Generation of Global Citizens |
For nearly a decade, the Center for Global Leadership (CGL) at the Academy of Notre Dame de Namur has empowered students, faculty, and staff to explore the world beyond the classroom. Founded in 2016, the CGL’s mission is to offer authentic experiences that foster cultural curiosity, humility, and compassion—core values in global leadership and service.
Under the leadership of Mrs. Nora Moffat, the CGL sponsors impactful programs for Notre Dame students like the Global Citizen Scholar (GCS), international partnerships, and curriculum alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Each year, over 120 students participate in immersive domestic and international trips focused on service, leadership, and cultural exchange.
Students collaborate with peers from sister schools in seven countries around the globe and engage with organizations including the United Nations and the International Coalition of Girls’ Schools. Programs like tutoring students in Kenya and cultural exchanges with India encourage empathy and global awareness.
Alumnae and current students alike praise the program’s transformative impact, from building confidence abroad to understanding education through a global lens. As student Lila Raiser ’26 reflected after her trip to Greece and Italy, “It allowed me to be independent and connect with history and people in meaningful ways.”
